Monfragüe National Park
National Park, Biosphere Reserve, Special Protection Area for Birds, Site of Community Importance, Special Area of Conservation and Starlight Destination are the protected status that Monfragüe currently holds. A set of mountains, “dehesas” and riverbanks is home to one of the best-preserved areas of Mediterranean forest in southern Europe.
A landmark for ornithologists, birdwatchers and nature photographers from around the world, Monfragüe is one of the most important territories for bird ecology in Europe, and is possibly the best place in Europe for observing diurnal birds of prey.
Spanish Imperial Eagle, Golden Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Eagle Owl, and Black Stork coexist in this natural paradise alongside a wide array of other species, forming a remarkable community of animals and plants.
Of the 360 bird species that inhabit Extremadura throughout the year, 210 species live in this territory, 141 of which are nesting species.
