Plains of Caceres and Trujillo, steppe birds, the Great Bustard´s plains.

The cereal plains are the result of human action over the natural environment to produce dry-land herbaceous crops, mainly cereals. The steppe areas are ecosystems with a high and peculiar biodiversity. In Extremadura, we can find some of the most representative examples of this ecosystem within Europe: the Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes Plains, Santa Marta de Magasca Plains and Trujillo Plains; all of them are being declared Special Protection Area for Birds (SPAB) because of their high ornithologist value.
Here we can observer the following bird species:
Residents: Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Stone-curlew, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Calandra Lark, Golden Eagle, Common Kestrel, Little Owl, Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture.
Summertime birds: Montagu´s Harrier, Lesser Kestrel, Short-toed Eagle, Booted Eagle, Egypcian Vulture, European Roller, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Collared Pratincole, European Bee-eater, Black-eared Wheatear, Greater Shot-toed Lark, Common Quail.
Wintertime birds: Hen Harrier, Common Crane, European Golden Plover.
