Monfrague National Park, the mountains of the raptors.
Monfrague constitutes one of the most beautiful examples of the Mediterranean forest in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Monfrague is declared nowadays to be a protected area under the following denominations: National Park, Biosphere Reserve, Special Protection Area for Birds (SPAB) and Community Importance Place, being beyond doubt one of the best places in Europe to watch daytime raptors.
The most outstanding bird species we can observe here are:
Residents: Spanish Imperial Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Eagle Owl, Black Wheatear, Datford Warbler, Blue Rock Thrush, Azure-winged Magpie.
Summertime birds: Egypcian Vulture, Short-toed Eagle, Booted Eagle, Black Kite, Black Stork, Alpine Swift, White-rumped Swift, Golden Oriole.
Other animal species: Otter, Red Deer, Red Fox, Wild Boar, Spanish Terrapin.
In this route we go through the core of the National Park and visit the lookouts of the rivers Tajo and Tiétar, taking our time to observe the great wealth of the fauna. It is an extremely beautiful and very recommendable route to initiate oneself into birdwatching.
